The Host (2006), by Joon-ho Bong, 116 min, South Korea

With the best box office performance of all time in South Korea, The Host opened in cinemas internationally and with much hype as both a send up of antiquated monster movie and a frighteningly contemporary allegory on global relations, corporate capitalist, and the environment. From Manohla Dargis’s review in The New York Times: “”The Host is a loopy, feverishly imaginative genre hybrid about the demons that haunt us from without and within.”
