Visitor Policy: Prohibited Items
MoMA PS1 reserves the right to refuse entry to any visitor carrying items that may pose a risk to visitors, staff, artwork, the building, or museum operations, including all items listed below as well as items not listed at the discretion of MoMA PS1 Security. These rules help protect the artwork, maintain clear pathways, and ensure the safety of visitors and staff. All bags and personal items are subject to inspection as a condition of entry. Items left unattended outside designated areas may be removed.
- Shopping carts, utility carts, and wagons: Personal shopping carts, utility carts, pull-behind wagons, and similar items are not permitted.
- Luggage and oversized bags: Rolling suitcases, carry-ons, large duffel bags, and oversized bags are not permitted.
- Strollers and children’s scooters: Strollers are not permitted in the galleries. Subject to space availability and staff discretion, strollers and children’s scooters may be temporarily staged in a designated area. This is not a secure storage service.
- Wheeled items: E-scooters, skateboards, hoverboards, bicycles, roller skates, rollerblades, and shoes with wheels are not permitted.
- Art-making materials: The use of paint, adhesives, epoxies, glues, markers, and ink pens are not permitted in the galleries. Only graphite pencils, colored pencils and crayons may be used.
- Decorations: Banners, signs, confetti, balloons, plants, flower arrangements, and similar decorative items are not permitted. Handheld bouquets are limited to a maximum of 35 stems and must be placed in a locker. Vases with standing water are prohibited.
- Photography and recording equipment: Tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, professional video equipment, lighting equipment, and other equipment that may obstruct pathways or disturb visitors are not permitted without prior approval.
- Drones: Drones, mini-copters, and unmanned aerial devices are prohibited.
- Food and drink: Outside food and drink are not permitted in the building, except sealed items or items needed for medical, accessibility, infant, or family care purposes. All food and beverages are prohibited in the galleries.
- Alcohol: Outside alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.
- Illegal substances: Illegal drugs, substances, or contraband are prohibited.
- Weapons: Firearms, ammunition, knives, blades, scissors, tools, and other items that may be used as weapons are prohibited.
- Hazardous materials: Pepper spray, mace, flammable liquids, aerosols, fuels, fireworks, toxic substances, and biological agents are prohibited.
- Noise-making items: Portable speakers, airhorns, musical instruments, and other noise-making devices are not permitted unless approved in advance by the museum.
- Animals: Only service animals are permitted. Service animals must remain leashed, harnessed, and otherwise under control at all times. Emotional support animals are not permitted at any time.
- Costumes and masks: Costumes, masks, props, or attire that obscures identity, obstructs pathways, touches artwork, or creates a safety concern are not permitted. Full-face masks are prohibited.
Onsite Storage
- Electronic lockers: Small bags and personal items may be stored in self-service electronic lockers. Locker dimensions are 15" × 17" × 18".
- Storage: MoMA PS1 does not provide coat check or storage for luggage or oversized items.
- Assumption of risk: Items stored in lockers or temporarily staged in designated areas are left at the owner’s sole risk. MoMA PS1 assumes no responsibility for loss, theft, or damage to personal property.
