MoMA PS1 is pleased to present the premiere of FOODTOPIA: después de todo territorio (2021), a new film by Las Nietas de Nonó. The film, produced with support from MoMA PS1, continues a multimedia project contemplating the over-industrialization of food in the Caribbean. The film takes as its setting the Blasina stream, a natural space threatened by development and water extraction located near the home of Las Nietas de Nonó in the San Antón barrio in Puerto Rico. Both a film and a record of a durational performance, the work documents Las Nietas de Nonó walking through abandoned buildings and streams filled with debris, harvesting wild fruits, hunting an invasive species of iguana, and cooking a meal with their gathered food. These moments were captured during peak pandemic times, when supermarkets and other public spaces were considered sites of infection and danger. In their search for a "foodtopia,” Las Nietas de Nonó reflect on the conditions of both utopia and dystopia inherent in life on an island-colony.
