NYC is always in a state of flux. Often residents don’t have the tools, access, or opportunity to envision the future of their neighborhood. Join us at the 46th Ave Pop-Up Plaza (in front of the PS1 main entrance) to build your block with Block Builder, an artwork and toolkit by Randy Plemel that invites community members to engage in participatory futuring. We will give residents the tools; stamps, stickers, pens, etc., to create and share their visions for a city block. Just bring your hopes, dreams, and ideas for the future of your block!

Randy Plemel is a designer and artist based in Long Island City, specializing in designing better ways for people to engage with their communities. Plemel has done extensive work in the public sector working with great partners from the City of New York Civic Engagement Commission, to the Knight Foundation to reimagine the civic commons across eight cities, Bloomberg Philanthropies to cultivate city-based innovation in the U.S. and India, AARP to evolve their role in creating livable communities for all, and the City of Los Angeles and NYCHA to make cities better through design.

In 2021, MoMA PS1 partnered with the NYC DOT to launch the 46th Ave Pop-Up Plaza as part of our commitment to share resources and open space with our communities. We collaborate with artists and organizations to program the plaza with events and activities for local residents that foster connections and contribute to a more vibrant NYC cultural landscape.
