Stage is a participatory installation and sound work that draws on the history of the microphone as a tool for protest and public oratory, while recalling the metonymic references to microphones in hip-hop lyrics from the 1980s to the present.
From the very outset of her career in the 1950s, Niki de Saint Phalle (American and French, 1930–2002) defied artistic conventions, creating works that were overtly feminist, performative, collaborative, and monumental. Her first major US exhibition, Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life features over 200 works that highlight Saint Phalle’s interdisciplinary approach and engagement with pressing social issues. Innovation was key to Saint Phalle’s process: from beginning to end, she envisioned new ways of inhabiting the world.
Gregg Bordowitz: I Wanna Be Well is a personal and singular record of an artist who has been living with HIV for more than half of his adult life. The Fortune Society (Fortune) activates Homeroom with art, poetry, and resources created by artists and mentors in their Creative Arts program. Located within walking distance of MoMA PS1, Fortune’s overarching mission is to support successful reentry from and promote alternatives to incarceration, thus strengthening the fabric of our communities.
Pennants & Poets was an installation and spoken word event created by Jenny Polak in collaboration with writers from The Fortune Society and Hour Children Working Women. Jenny Polak led an outdoor pennant-making workshop in the 46th Ave Pop-Up Plaza (in front of the PS1 main entrance), which was followed by a reading of original work by writers from The Fortune Society featured in Homeroom.
The event featured 50 flying pennant flags printed with poems and messages from people who have been directly impacted by incarceration. The pennant flags, with their nautical and sporting associations, created a resilient and celebratory backdrop for the event. The combined messages formed a powerful collective call for an end to mass incarceration and support for the millions affected by it.
