This fall, MoMA PS1 will present a major exhibition of Vaginal Davis, spanning five decades of her practice as a performer, visual artist, author, filmmaker, musician, educator, self-proclaimed “Blacktress,” and countercultural icon. The presentation spotlights Ms. Davis’s role as an underground trailblazer in culture and queer politics—as well as her uncompromising glamour.
Drop by Homeroom for a friendly space and artmaking workshop inspired by Yto Barrada’s Le Grand Soir and the Moroccan tradition of human pyramids. Using biodegradable packing peanuts, participants will build modular sculptures that explore collaboration, imagination, and the act of lifting one another up, physically and metaphorically. Stop by to create together and help construct a shared vision of joy and collective possibility. All materials are provided—just bring your creativity!
Join us to celebrate the opening of Vaginal Davis: Magnificent Product, a major exhibition spanning five decades of work by the influential artist, performer, author, and countercultural icon. In conjunction with the opening, friend of Ms. Davis Kembra Pfahlfer leads a performance in the courtyard with shock-rock musicians The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black.
Join legendary graffiti artist and painter Lady Pink for a hands-on mural workshop inspired by Foundations, her newly commissioned mural for the MoMA PS1 Plaza. Born in Ecuador and raised in Astoria, Queens, Lady Pink started writing graffiti as a teenager in 1979. She has transformed subway cars, city walls, and galleries with her bold work. In this workshop, she invites teens and families to explore the power of taking up space through graffiti and mural-making techniques, using chalk spray paint to collaboratively create directly onto PS1’s courtyard walls.
Join this Open Studio to see new artwork and meet artists from Young New Yorkers (YNY), an organization that transforms lives through art, activism, and social welfare. A community partner of MoMA PS1, YNY encourages youth to become leaders using creativity and advocacy, inspiring positive change and build brighter futures. Head to Classroom to learn more about the work created in Art Diversion Programs, including R.A.R.E. (Re-imagining and Recreating Experiences).
Join artist Inuuteq Storch and curator Jody Graf for an intimate walkthrough of Soon Will Summer Be Over, Storch’s first solo exhibition in the US. Hear directly from the artist about his photographic process, the communities and terrains he pictures, and how he counters a Greenlandic photography history steeped in a colonial gaze.
